Turnbulls originated as an independent Vauxhall dealership under the ownership of Mr. George Turnbull in Plymouth, Devon. It began its journey after the aftermath of World War II and experienced rapid growth. George recognized an opportunity to enter the vehicle radio market.
In 1956, Turnbulls ventured into the sale and installation of vehicle radios, becoming an official dealer for Radiomobile in June 1957. The Radiomobile division of Turnbulls initially operated from what is now the Mayflower car park site and later relocated to Bilbury Street in Bretonside.
During the 1970s, George Turnbull retired and sold the business to Wincanton Motor Co. The business subsequently changed hands in the 1980s, passing to Arlington, and was later acquired by LEX.
In 1995, LEX made the decision to withdraw from Plymouth. At this point, Ian, who was the manager at Turnbulls, recognized an opportunity and purchased the radio division, preserving the Turnbulls name. In 2011, Turnbulls moved to larger premises and now operates from New Victoria House on Weston Park Road in Plymouth.
In 2015, Ashley joined the business alongside Ian, and A I Campers was established as a subsidiary of Turnbulls. They identified a gap in the market for customized and unique camper van conversions, with a strong emphasis on quality and a commitment to providing customers with a personalized experience during the build process and exceptional post-sales support.
Leveraging their collective 60+ years of experience in the motor trade, A I Campers quickly gained a reputation for delivering camper conversions of uncompromising quality. They aim to offer customers a comprehensive package that capitalizes on the renowned quality and reliability of Mercedes and VW vehicles. Every camper van is tailored to individual specifications, meeting even the most demanding requirements specified by the customer.
Their ultimate goal is to ensure years of enjoyable ownership through professionally designed, built, and finished products, all backed by a 2-year warranty on all conversion work.
